We are moving to Phuket in the middle of the school year. Where does tutoring start?

It starts with a comparison rather than a lesson. Your child has covered a set of topics in a particular order, and the new school has covered a different set in a different order. The useful work in the first two or three sessions is mapping one onto the other and writing down what fell through the middle. Teaching that list is the easy part; finding it is what takes a tutor who knows both systems.

Which parts of the island do you cover?

The three districts of Phuket province: Mueang Phuket in the south and east, Kathu on the west coast, and Thalang in the north. In person works best inside a district, because the island has no rail and every trip is a road trip. Across districts at school-run hour, online is usually the more honest answer, and we will say so rather than promise a tutor who arrives late and tired.

Can the sessions be online if we live in Kamala or Rawai?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and in those two corners online is often the better plan rather than the fallback. Kamala sits behind hill roads and Rawai sits at the far southern tip, so a tutor travelling from the centre spends more of the evening in a car than in the lesson. Online keeps the slot at a fixed time each week, and a slot that stays put is the single best predictor that a family keeps going.

When someone says A-Level in Phuket, which exam do they mean?

Always ask, because in Thailand the name covers two completely different exams. One of them is Cambridge A-Level, the British qualification, sat in Year 12 and 13 at several schools on this island. The other belongs to TCAS: ทปอ. runs it under the name Applied Knowledge Level, ม.6 students sit it, and it goes by code from 61 to 89 instead of by subject name. A tutor who is strong at one of them may know nothing useful about the other.

My child is moving from a French programme into IGCSE. What has to be caught up?

Accepted Answer

Less vocabulary than families expect and more sequencing than they expect. The mathematics itself carries across; what changes is which topics were introduced in which year, and how a question is expected to be answered on paper. Phuket has two French-curriculum schools listed alongside nine British ones, so this particular move happens here more often than it would in a town with a single system.

Does O-NET still matter for a student in ม.6?

Accepted Answer

สทศ. still runs the paper, in ม.6 and in the two earlier sittings below it, and doing well on it is still worth something. It stopped being a gate into university some years ago, and since ปีการศึกษา 2563 it has been voluntary. So treat it as a measure of where a student stands rather than as the thing the year turns on. The papers that decide a university place are TGAT, TPAT and the A-Level subject codes.

How do the TCAS dates land on a family living in Phuket?

Exactly as they land everywhere else, which is the point. The rounds run from Portfolio through Quota and Admission to Direct Admission, and the papers in between are sat once a year on fixed national dates. A student in Phuket has the same deadlines as a student in Bangkok and a thinner local market of teachers who have sat those papers. That gap is the honest reason the online line exists.

How much does it cost?

No figure appears on this page, because Phuket rates are not set yet and a made-up number would be worse than none. Five things move it: how advanced the year is, how few people on this island teach that subject at all, how far someone has to drive to reach you, how long you want a session to run, and whether it happens in your house or over a call. Published rates here are quoted by the hour, and the rate cards that name a minimum put it at two hours a visit. On an island with no railway on it, that is also the length that makes the drive worth a tutor's afternoon. Someone else takes over the slot, and the change costs you nothing. Ask about this before you start rather than after, with any tutoring service you consider: a clear answer about re-matching tells you more than a promise that mismatches never happen. They do happen, on every list of tutors that has ever existed.

Will the session be in English or in Thai?

Accepted Answer

Whichever the household actually uses. On this island both are ordinary. A child in an international school may need the subject explained in Thai at home and answered in English on the paper, and that combination is normal rather than a problem.
