TCAS A-Level 87, a school Language B course, or no exam at all. Nothing sensible can be planned until this is settled, and it takes one conversation.
Three different Mandarin exams are sat in the same Bangkok streets, and most families only find out which one they are on when the deadline is already close. We start by naming yours, then teach for it.

Mandarin tuition is one-to-one teaching of Modern Standard Chinese, matched to the exam the learner actually sits: the TCAS A-Level 87 paper for Thai candidates, the Language B course for international-school students, or plain working Mandarin for adults. Tones, characters and grammar are taught as three separate skills, because they fail separately.

The ladder is not one ladder. A ม.5 student and a Year 11 student in the same neighbourhood are preparing for two different papers, and the teaching order is not the same.
First characters, first tones
Primary Mandarin lives on sound and recognition. Children copy characters long before they can produce them from memory, and that gap is normal. The work here is stroke order done correctly the first time, because a habit formed now survives for years.

Lower secondary is where Mandarin stops being a friendly extra and starts carrying a grade. It is also where the ม.4 stream decision is forming, and a student who quietly drops Chinese here closes the TCAS A-Level 87 door before anyone notices it was open.

This is exam-facing work. The paper is one of the sixteen TCAS A-Level subject papers, it sits in the 83-89 foreign-language slot, and it is written in characters. Confident speech is not what is being marked here, and students who arrive confident about speaking are often the ones who lose marks.

The international ladder runs on a different calendar and a different assessment. Mandarin here is coursework and oral as much as it is reading, and a learner may be fluent in conversation while still handling characters at a much earlier level.

Adult learners usually arrive with a specific room in mind: a supplier call, a factory floor, a family they married into. The syllabus is built from that room. Characters are optional at first and become necessary the moment a contract appears.

None of these are about effort. Every one of them is a wrong assumption that looked completely reasonable at the time.
Why it happens
In Thailand the words name two unrelated qualifications. TCAS A-Level names the university-entrance papers set by ทปอ., and Chinese sits inside them at code 87. Cambridge A-Level is a Year 12-13 international-school qualification. Search results, tutor ads and revision books mix them freely.
How we fix it
The first question in the first session is which body sets the paper. Everything after that, the texts, the vocabulary, the calendar, follows from that answer, and the two plans share almost nothing.
Why it happens
TCAS A-Level 83 French, 84 German, 85 Japanese, 86 Korean, 87 Chinese, 88 Pali and 89 Spanish are scheduled in the same slot. A candidate sits one of them. Families discover this in registration week, after two years of splitting effort across two languages.
How we fix it
We settle the foreign-language choice in ม.5, on evidence: a timed reading on each. TCAS A-Level 82 ภาษาอังกฤษ is tested separately and stays available, which is the part most people get backwards.
Why it happens
Those names left TCAS at the TCAS66 changeover, when TGAT and TPAT took over and the TCAS A-Level papers replaced วิชาสามัญ. A great deal of secondhand Chinese revision material, and most of the advice in older forum threads, still aims at papers nobody sits any more.
How we fix it
Material is checked for which system it was written for before a student spends a weekend on it. Current TCAS A-Level 87 practice only, and the cycle running now is TCAS70.
Why it happens
Thai has five tones and Mandarin has four plus a neutral one, so a Thai learner hears that tone matters, which is a real advantage. The contours are not the same shapes, and the closest Thai tone is near enough to feel right while being wrong, which is far harder to correct than hearing nothing at all.
How we fix it
Tone is drilled in minimal pairs against Thai contours, so the difference is heard first and explained afterwards. Readings are recorded, and the learner hears themselves, which no amount of telling achieves.
Why it happens
Bangkok classrooms hold plenty of heritage learners: an estimated 110,000 to 130,000 new Chinese migrants were in Thailand as of 2022, and a great many Thai-Chinese households speak at home too. Speech runs years ahead of reading, and the exam is a written paper.
How we fix it
Speaking and reading are measured separately in session one, and the plan is built from the lower of the two. Nothing is more discouraging than a fluent speaker being handed a beginner's book by mistake.
Why it happens
In the TCAS70 cycle, TCAS A-Level registration runs 14-20 January 2570 and the papers sit 13-15 March 2570. A student who starts once registration opens has about eight weeks, and character recall is the one thing eight weeks cannot manufacture.
How we fix it
Mandarin preparation is counted backwards from March, with the character workload spread across the year. Short frequent sessions beat long rare ones here, and that is simply how character memory behaves.
