Thai Tutoring for International School Students

Walk into a Bangkok international school and ask about Thai, and you will be told the school teaches it. What you will not be told, unless you ask the next question, is which course your child is in.

One course is Thai for children whose strongest language is Thai. It reads literature, it writes argument, and it assumes the vocabulary of a reader. The other is Thai for children acquiring it, which builds the script, everyday accuracy and the confidence to speak. Both are real courses with real exams behind them. They are simply aimed at different children.

The reason this matters so much here is that a Thai-national child who has spent eight years being taught in English can look like a candidate for the first course and perform like a candidate for the second. Speech is not evidence. A timed piece of writing is.

Three destinations, and families regularly aim at the wrong one because two of them share a name.

Cambridge files its first-language Thai qualification under 0518, and the syllabus now in force covers the 2025, 2026 and 2027 exam years. That is the paper most first-language candidates in Bangkok meet at the end of Year 11.

The IB Diploma takes Thai in two places: as a Language A literature course, or as Thai B at standard or higher level. Bangkok tutoring agencies already advertise Thai B at both levels, so the tutors exist; the scarcer skill is marking literary analysis written in Thai.

The third destination has nothing to do with the school. A Thai university place through TCAS runs on the ทปอ. papers, and the Thai one is TCAS A-Level subject 81 ภาษาไทย. It is written for a ม.6 student inside the national curriculum, so the exam behind those two letters is Thai from end to end, while Cambridge A-Level remains the school's own qualification. A Bangkok search under the abbreviation returns both families of page at once, and telling them apart falls to the reader.

Thai has forty-four consonant letters, and they are sorted into three classes. A syllable's tone is produced by that class, by whether the syllable is live or dead, by the length of the vowel, and by the tone mark if there is one. Four marks, five tones, and no simple correspondence between them.

A child who grew up hearing Thai already knows the tone of every word they use. What they do not know is which mark produces it on which class of consonant, and that is precisely what writing asks. The knowledge runs in the wrong direction.

On top of that sits the spelling. Thai keeps the shape of the Pali and Sanskrit words it borrowed, including letters that are written and never spoken, marked with the ตัวการันต์. It keeps several letters for the same sound, so ศ, ษ and ส have to be learned word by word. And it holds one famous closed list: the twenty words spelled with ไม้ม้วน ใ, which Thai children memorise as a verse because there is no rule to derive them from. Every other word takes ไม้มลาย ไ.

None of this is hard in the sense of being clever. It is hard in the sense of being large, and it yields to short, frequent, marked practice better than to long sessions.

Bangkok runs two school years side by side, and a Thai tutor usually lives in the other one.

ปีการศึกษา 2569, the national year, began on 16 May and ends on 30 September. October is holiday. The second term starts in November, and the year finishes with a long break that opens on 1 April and closes in the middle of May 2570. An international school, meanwhile, runs August to June.

That mismatch has practical consequences. Your child's June and July holiday, the obvious window for intensive Thai, falls in the middle of a Thai teacher's first term, when they have the least room. Your child's April break, which feels like dead time, is when Thai schools are closed and Thai tutors have the most availability. And the international school's exam season in May and June sits right at the end of a Thai term, when everyone is tired at once.

Plan around it and the year works. Ignore it and the intensive fortnight you imagined turns into the fortnight nobody was free.

Thai tutors are not scarce in Bangkok. Thai tutors who can teach this particular subject are.

The common failure is a tutor who is a wonderful teacher of conversational Thai meeting a Year 10 candidate who needs an essay marked against a Cambridge mark scheme. The second failure is the reverse: a Thai-school teacher, excellent with the national curriculum, meeting a foreign eight-year-old who has never seen the alphabet, and reaching for the methods that work on children who have heard Thai since birth.

So the questions worth asking are narrow. Have you taught this course. Can you explain a tone rule without writing a single roman letter. Show me how you would mark this page. What would you correct first, and what would you leave.

We ask those in the interview because a family cannot be expected to run the audition themselves, and because the answers separate candidates faster than any list of credentials.
