Two school systems, running at the same time, in the same city
Almost everything that makes a Bangkok lesson work or fail is decided by which of these two ladders a child is on, and by which pocket of the city the family lives in.
Two tracks, one tutor list
A household on this street may be sitting O-NET and TCAS; the household above it may be sitting IGCSE in May. The same tutor rarely fits both, so we keep the two tracks apart and say plainly which one a lesson belongs to.
The year opens in mid-May and closes in March, with the long break falling across April. The official curriculum is still the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551, revised in 2560 and adjusted in 2566, so a tutor working from an older edition is working from the wrong book.

The international ladder

The year opens in August and finishes in June, which puts the heaviest exam months at the opposite end of the calendar from the Thai system. Thailand has 40 IB World Schools, of which 32 are authorised for the Diploma Programme.

NIST International School sits at 36 Sukhumvit Soi 15, a short walk from BTS Asok, and runs the full IB continuum.
Bangkok holds two thirds of Japan's registered nationals in Thailand, and this is where most of them live. Japanese-medium and bilingual demand is concentrated here.
One rail line runs the length of the district, so an evening can hold two sessions without a car.

The office corridor. Families here are usually on a work posting, and the parent who books the lesson is often the one who will not be home for it.

High-skill foreign employment in Thailand has been climbing for several years, and this corridor is where those households sit.
Evening slots go first here. A slot held at the same hour each week survives the term; one that moves rarely does.

Silom and Charoen Krung. The district where Bangkok's addresses most often mislead newcomers.

St. Andrews International School Sathorn is at 9 Sathorn Soi 4, North Sathorn Road, Bang Rak 10500. The name says Sathorn; the district registry says Bang Rak, and that is the one a driver needs.
It teaches ages two to eleven, so a family here usually needs primary-level tutoring, years ahead of any exam.
Silom and Charoen Krung are walkable, which makes this one of the few pockets where a tutor can hold back-to-back sessions in different households.

The river is the boundary that matters. A tutor living across it is not a tutor who can reach a five o'clock session.

Bang Kapi here is a subdistrict inside Huai Khwang, and it is a different place from the Bang Kapi district further east. Two campus addresses in this corridor carry that name, and mixing them up sends a tutor across the city.
Thai-Japanese Association School is at 258 Soi 17, Rama 9 Road, Bang Kapi, Huai Khwang 10310, teaching grades one to nine; it recorded 2,631 students in April 2018 and is described as the largest school campus in Bangkok.
Shrewsbury's City Campus is at 982 Rim Klong Samsen Road, off Rama 9, in the same subdistrict, so two very different curricula sit within a few minutes of each other.

The south-eastern corridor, where Sukhumvit stops being a city street and becomes a highway out of town.

Bangkok Patana School, founded in 1957, is at 643 La Salle Road, Bang Na Tai, Bang Na 10260, and follows the British curriculum.
The school run here is long and one-directional, so a session that starts before the return traffic is worth more than a later one that everyone arrives late for.
Several schools marketed as Bangna sit across the provincial line in Samut Prakan. Check the district on the address before you assume a tutor is local.

Directories frequently file Wellington under Bang Na. It sits in Saphan Sung, and the two are a long drive apart.
The area is reached by road, so lessons here are planned in longer blocks so one journey covers enough teaching to be worth making.

Northern Bangkok, around the old airport. The furthest pocket from the Sukhumvit cluster, and the one most often left off a tutor's map.

Dates are given in the Buddhist Era with the common era in brackets, because the school letter says one and the calendar on your phone says the other.

Twice, depending on the school. Government schools opened semester one on 16 May 2569 and closed it on 30 September 2569, took October off, and opened semester two on 1 November 2569; the long break runs 1 April to 15 May 2570. International schools in Bangkok open in August and finish in June. A household with a child in each system is living two academic years at once.
